Sciatica is one of the common health problems and is something most of us are aware of!
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is usually considered a back pain that radiates down to the right or left hip area and travels to the foot. Other related symptoms of sciatica may be numbness, weakness, and tingling in the legs. This condition is medically known as ‘lumbar radiculopathy’.

- Obesity – If you are overweight, you are more likely to suffer from sciatica as excess weight can have a greater impact on your spine health.
- Sitting – If you tend to sit for long periods of time, you are more likely to develop sciatica.
- Diabetes – A condition such as diabetes can alter the body’s mechanism of using sugar. These changes can cause nerve damage, which can lead to sciatic pain.
- Occupation – Working in a job that requires lifting heavy weights or twisting or tilting the spine can also cause sciatica.
Effective treatment for sciatica pain
Some treatments are known to be effective for sciatica problems such as:
1- Exercise can be a good option to relieve sciatic pain
Well, it is generally recognized that rest is the best solution to aches and pains. Contrary to popular belief, exercise is a great way to relieve sciatica in your legs and back. You can start with a gentle exercise routine. There are many physical activities you can start with, such as walking around blocks.
Physical activity keeps the spine strong and reduces pain by increasing the release of hormones known as endorphins.
Another great way to improve sciatica symptoms and relieve pain is stretching. Stretching can help increase spinal flexibility as well as build strength in the core and spine. You can also try stretching at home to relieve sciatic pain.
3- Posture work
An important cause of sciatica is posture. Holding the body in the wrong position for too long can often make sciatica worse. Therefore, it is recommended to change positions every 20 minutes to prevent sciatica symptoms, as this exercise can relieve pressure on the spine.
4- Over-the-counter medicines
There are many NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that can relieve symptoms of sciatica and make life easier for patients. These drugs not only reduce pain, but also combat inflammation, which can better relieve disease symptoms.
5- Try heating and cooling pads
Alternative heating and cooling is an effective way to relieve symptoms of sciatica. This is a scientifically proven way to relieve pain and inflammation. Cooling can help reduce inflammation, followed by heating that regulates blood flow to the affected area. You can place an ice pack on the affected area for 15 minutes every hour and apply heat every 2-3 hours.

6- Try Lumbar Braces
